Gudang Gallery

A derelict port warehouse stripped back to its steel bones and reopened as a contemporary art space with almost nothing added.

The building was structurally sound but had been infilled repeatedly since the 1970s. Demolition was almost entirely subtractive — removing four decades of partitions to find the original 24-metre clear span.

New work is limited to a services spine along the north wall, a raised timber floor plate that hides all cabling, and a set of movable gallery walls on castors.

North-facing roof lights were reglazed with diffusing panels to give even, gallery-grade daylight, cutting artificial lighting to evening hours only.
